CULPEPER AIRFEST- SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1999.
This full-scale fly-in/air show was held at the W.T. Martin Airport near Culpeper, Virginia. My wife, Ella, and I, arrived on Friday evening and immediately met our host, Jerry Smith. Jerry is a fellow ham, K1AEP. We had previously met only on the airwaves. It was on his invitation that we were there.

Just before dusk, he gave me a nice twenty minute ride over the beautiful Virginia countryside in his 1947 Aeronca L-16A military observation plane. A barbecue/hangar party followed, where we met lots of the CAS (Culpeper Aero Squadron) members, and got to see some of their classic airplanes. By the end of the evening I came to realize how much love these people have for these nostalgic aircraft! Later, we bedded down on a grassy area near the taxiway of runway 22. Jerry pitched his tent under one wing of his L-16A, and we parked our RV along side.

Saturday morning brought broken clouds and light winds, right down the runway. CAS hosted a very nice pancake breakfast beginning at 8 AM, along with the sound of arriving aircraft. I think there were probably over 50 aircraft there, in all!

Planes of practically every classification except modern jets showed up throughout the morning. Lots of Stearmans in various military and civilian color schemes, homebuilts, and a couple of modern acrobatic planes like a Yak and a Pitts Special were there, too. Charlie Schwenker performed a very nice aerobatic routine with his Pitts Special, but the event that gave me the most goose bumps was several low fly-by's of the P-51 Mustang.

We had been invited there to tow banners, and felt pretty special, because the only other R/C modelers in attendance were Larry Kauffman and Charles Koustenis, members of the Fauquier Aero Recreation Modelers (FARM for short), AMA Charter #1654. Larry and Charles had some nice aerobatic aircraft there to fly, and Charles also brought along a magnificent B-25, built from a "Wing" kit, for static display. There are lots of photos on Jerry's web site for the CAS and you can take a look at
<http://www.gtechno.com/cas/>.

If you are looking for a scale subject, and CAS decides to host this event again, you should try to get there. It is just about a three hour ride from Harrisburg, and through very pretty countryside this time of the year!

My thanks to Jerry and the rest of the Culpeper Aero Squadron for making us feel right at home!

BATTERY INFO THAT I HAVE PICKED UP "ALONG THE WAY"

(1) Sanyo uses red covers on their Ni-Cads to signify "Rapid Charge", yellow for those that should not be rapid-charged. The downside to the rapid charge variety is that the charge will decay faster during non-use.

(2) Sanyo also uses an "R" in their designation for the rapid charge variety. For instance, "1300SCR" stands for a 1300 mah "Sub-C" cell and "Rapid Charge".

(3) Charge rates of less than 1/10 C will not fully charge batteries, no matter how long they are left on (for instance, less than 50ma for a 500 mah cell). Once charged, however, a trickle will keep them up.

(4) Sanyo 1100AAU is a fairly new battery that weighs very little more than many 500 mah cells, but has more than twice the capacity. These batteries should not be quick-charged.

(5) Whenever I put a new pack into use, I use a "Sharpie" marker to date the pack. That way I always know the age of all my packs.
