The Aerodrome Corner Frank Bossio, Airport Manager |
I would like to begin by expressing my thanks to Mike Allison and the entire Culpeper Aero Squadron for putting together a superb organization that enhances the quality of general aviation. I especially want to thank Jerry Smith for his superb effort on the web page. That said, let's get on with it.
I was taught as a young aviator that the three most important facets of aviation are: AVIATE, NAVIGATE, and COMMUNICATE.
AVIATE: Things are soon going to get interesting around the old Aerodrome. In October we are planning an airport appreciation day to enhance the public's understanding of general aviation and to showcase the airports role in the community.
I am soliciting input for possible events which could include; Young Eagles, aircraft rides, antique aircraft displays and a few displays of our flying prowess. Please let me know if you have any ideas or can contribute your talents for this important day.
If you are interested in promoting a fly-in for your type aircraft or a general fly-in breakfast or lunch, please let me know. We have had a couple of very successful fly-ins already.
NAVIGATE: On the second of August you will begin to see men and heavy equipment around the old aerodrome. These good folks will be removing all the FAR Part 77 obstructions so that we can begin the improvements to the taxiway in the fall and the subsequent improvements such as the runway extension. None of the planned activities should impinge on the sortie generation rate. All the construction is off runway/taxiway. Some heavy equipment will be positioned on the road near the hangars but with no attendant impact to the squadron.
We have completed the discussion phase of the localizer installation and have found a suitable property on which to place the ADF for the localizer approach to runway 4. If all goes well we will have advanced the placement of the localizer approach by two years. This means that we can be shooting approaches next summer. Keep your fingers crossed.
Look for our new preflight planning center to open soon. We will have a new computer with all the graphics and the mouse driven DUATS software so you can get usable weather and flight planning with the click of a mouse.
We are looking for solutions to the congested unicom frequency problem. The squadron has officially proposed 123.05 as the new frequency. The Virginia Department of Aviation has suggested 127.025 as a frequency that will be clear for many years to come. This change does come with an expense to change runway lighting control cards. I believe it is prudent to do this only once. I will work the issue with Mike Allison and the Executive board, please give him any thoughts that you may have on the subject.
COMMUNICATE: Our next special fuel price (.) will occur on the 21st of August in order to celebrate the birthday of Orville Wright (actually, the 19th) and NO! he didn't teach me to fly. Stop by and see us at the old ops shack, we get kinda lonely staring out the window watching you fly. Frank Bossio
