The Aerodrome Corner Frank Bossio, Airport Manager |
From Aerodrome Operations
Posted Wednesday 8 Mar 2000
Hello to all the wonderful patrons of the greatest little airport on the globe. Paul Miller, who gets paid huge sums of money to keep me on the straight and narrow, recently reminded me to update the airport news. Thanks again, Paul. There is a lot happening around the old aerodrome so let's get to itAVIATE
Spring is just around the corner and azure sky is beckoning to us all. The visibility is so good you can see all the way to the Blue Ridge and the wind is just right. Great weather for flying and lying. The bad news is that fuel prices have gone out of control, forcing us to raise the prices yet again. We have managed to keep the AV gas prices down to $2.00 per gal. with all of the discounts still intact. Not so fortunate with our Jet A. It took the single greatest leap in it's 10 year history making the price $2.18 per gal. Unfortunately, the aviation forecasts are not predicting a letup until mid to late summer.
We are in the pre-construction phase with the new hangar for Bald Eagle Aviation and Hangar 16 LLC. Bald Eagle is in the business of antique aircraft restoration. Their work is fantastic and they will have some very interesting projects to work on in the near future. More on that later.
We are in the process of obtaining some site prep money from the state to build the new hangars that we so desperately need. We will have a better feel for the timing as we progress. For those of you who haven't heard, we are building 14 new hangars very much like the ones in Warrenton. They will have electric bi-fold doors and will be much wider than the current hangars.
The taxiway construction package is out for bids and we are hoping to get the dollars in the budget as soon as Congress signs the spending bill. We are hoping for a new taxiway by early fall.
NAVIGATE
Work on the localizer is continuing apace. The soil borings have all been done on the airport site and the state has been up to discuss all of the options. If all goes according to plan,(Ha!) we should be shooting approaches in 6 months or so.
COMMUNICATE
Thanks to all for helping to make the hangar transition as easy as it was. There are still a few bumps in tarmac but overall it went pretty smooth. The good news is that we got a terrific asset in the process. Ms Tanya Woodward is now part of the permanent staff at the airport. and One of her various duties is the administration of the hangars. She is a wonderful addition and I am quite sure that you will enjoy working with her. Please stop in and say hello. Sadly, I must also report that I will not be spending as much time at the airport. I have taken on the additional responsibility for Economic Development in the county. We will continue to pursue the airport vision with vigor and I intend to remain fully engaged in the decision making process.Culpeper Airfest is scheduled for the weekend of October 7th this year. We will be forming a committee for air show events and coordination soon so please be generous with your time. We are now planning on making this a yearly event and we want this year to be bigger and better until finally...........did someone say Oshkosh? The Culpeper Aerosquadron will get a formal request for help from it's membership so if you have an interest in participating, let me or Tanya know. Last years volunteers carried the day, we hope to see you all there this year.
Fly-ins- We are committed to helping any of you with specific aircraft types or categories to host fly-ins at the airport. If you would like to host one please let us know. We are very happy to help. The airport will also host a few fly-ins of our own throughout the summer.
Thanks again for your patronage, I hope your deskbound days are few and your flying days are many. Remember, no one on their death bed said ever said " I wish I would have spent more time in the office." Great flying to all,
Frank
